BALANCED HORMONES BEGIN IN THE GUT

If you are struggling with your hormonal health, it’s time to optimize your gut health! Let me explain why.

THE GUT MICROBIOME

The microbiome is where all the magic happens. The bacteria in the gut affect every aspect of our hormonal health, by influencing the production and communication of sex hormones, thyroid hormones, cortisol, melatonin & estrogen metabolism.

THE GUT + VITAMINS

The gut is where we digest and absorb all of our nutrients (vitamins, minerals, amino acids), which are the building blocks of hormone production. If the gut is compromised, w won’t be absorbing or assimilating these nutrients properly and so our hormones will take a hit. Additionally, the gut is capable of making certain vitamins on its own, such as B vitamins.

THE GUT + NEUROTRANSMITTERS

The gut is also responsible for creating neurotransmitters that assist with hormonal balance in the body. The bacteria influence the production of serotonin, dopamine, melatonin, GABA & histamine. These play a direct role in dictating how you feel, your mood, breathing/allergy issues and your sleep.

GUT IMBALANCES

When the gut becomes compromised, nutrient absorption & neurotransmitter production become affected, which leads to hormonal imbalances. Gut imbalances look like SIBO, yeast/fungus overgrowths, parasitic infections, inflammation, viruses, bacteria, h. pylori & beta glucuronidase (hello excess estrogen). This is probably the first moment you will start to feel something off with your health.

LEAKY GUT

All the various gut imbalances can create a leaky gut. A leaky gut allows the tight junctions sealing the gut together to become loose, which lets toxins, pathogens & particles seep out of the gut and into the bloodstream. When this occurs, it triggers the immune system and this creates a chronic inflammatory response, which can lead to autoimmunity. In particular, it can lead to thyroid autoimmunity, such as Hashimotos, which greatly affects ALL hormone production.

THE GUT + ESTROGEN

The gut contains a collection of bacteria known as the estrobolome, responsible for estrogen metabolization. When compromised, estrogen is not broken down properly or cleared, thus it recirculates in the body. This causes an accumulation of estrogen and leads to estrogen dominant symptoms, which throws the body into hormonal chaos. Think bloating, painful periods, low sex drive, panic attacks, insomnia, fatigue, headaches & weight gain.
